Chips Wired Printing

DNP DS620A printer and required components for wired printing

Wired printing connects a DNP DS620A printer directly to Guac using a USB-A to USB-B 2.0 printer cable. The Chips Stand is not required for wired printing, although it can be used as a platform for the wired printer.

Before you get started, confirm that the printer is loaded with media, connected to power, and ready to connect to Guac.

Required parts for wired printing:

  • Guac Booth
  • DNP DS620A printer
  • Printer media
    • Paper roll
    • Ink ribbon
  • Printer AC power cable
  • USB-A to USB-B 2.0 printer cable

What To Know
Prepare Guac & Chips For Wired Printing

Guac and Chips assembled for wired printing

Before connecting the printer in the Fiesta iOS App, assemble Guac & Chips and prepare the printer’s cable connections.

Follow these steps to prepare Guac & Chips for wired printing:

  1. Assemble Guac and Chips. While assembling Guac, run the USB-A end of the printer cable and Guac's AC power cable through the poles
  2. Connect the USB-A end of the printer cable to the USB port on the bottom of the Guac head
  3. Connect the square USB-B end of the printer cable and the printer's AC power cable to the printer
  4. Connect the printer and Guac to power, then turn the printer on

Optional: Guac’s flash and umbrella aren’t required during printer setup, but they should be attached before each event to ensure the best capture quality.

How To
Configure The iPad's Ethernet Settings

The iPad's Ethernet settings must be entered correctly for the Guac Brain to communicate with the iPad and for the Fiesta iOS App to detect the wired printer connection.

  1. Open the Settings app on the iPad
  2. Tap Ethernet in the left navigation
  3. Under Interfaces, tap the connected Ethernet interface
  4. Tap Configure IP
  5. Tap Manual
  6. Tap IP Address
  7. Enter 172.16.0.7
  8. Tap Subnet Mask
  9. Enter 255.255.255.0
  10. Tap Save

 

Confirm Fiesta's Local Network permission:

  1. Return to the main iPad Settings menu
  2. Tap Privacy & Security
  3. Tap Local Network
  4. Confirm that Fiesta is enabled

Connect Chips In The Fiesta Printing Settings

  1. Open the Fiesta iOS App
  2. Tap an existing Event or create a new Event
  3. Tap Configure Event
  4. Tap the Printing tab
  5. Enable Printing
  6. Tap Select A Printer
  7. Tap Chips from the list
  8. Tap Test Print and confirm that the printer produces a print

Note: If Chips does not appear, confirm that Guac is powered on and that the printer connections, iPad Ethernet settings, and Fiesta Local Network permission are configured correctly. View the printer connection troubleshooting steps.

What To Know
Setting The Printer's Media Size

Chips Dashboard controls for adjusting the printer media size

The DNP DS620A’s default Media Size should remain set to 4x6 in the CUPS Settings so the printer can automatically adjust to print 2x6 photo strips or 4x6 captures, depending on the Photo Template selected for the event.
 

IMPORTANT: Do not change the default Media Size to 2x6. It must remain set to 4x6 for Fiesta to switch print sizes correctly when using Guac & Chips.
 

To set the default Media Size:

  1. Open the Fiesta iOS App while Chips is connected to Guac
  2. Tap the Account Icon in the upper-right corner
  3. Tap Hardware Dashboard
  4. Tap Chips Dashboard
  5. Tap Adjust Printer Media Size under Printer Settings
  6. Tap the Administration dropdown menu below Chips (Idle, Accepting Jobs, Shared)
  7. Tap Set Default Options
  8. Confirm that Media Size is set to 4x6. If it is not, tap 4x6
  9. Tap Set Default Options at the bottom of the page to save the setting
     

Note: You may be required to enter the following username and password to access the Administration dropdown menu:

  • Username: printer
  • Password: password

Printing 2x6 Photo Templates

Double 2x6 Photo Template selected for printing with Chips

To print double 2x6 photo strips, configure these settings in Design Studio and CUPS:

  • Set the Photo Template to Double 2x6 in Design Studio Editor's Layout Settings

  • Set the DNP DS620A's default Media Size to 4x6 in CUPS
    IMPORTANT: Setting the default Media Size to 4x6 enables Fiesta to automatically adjust Chips to produce either 2x6 or 4x6 prints, depending on the Photo Template selected.

Note: Single 2x6 printing is not officially supported for Chips. The DNP DS620A prints two copies of the 2x6 Photo Template onto a single sheet of media and cuts the two strips automatically.

Print Adjustments

Scale and Offset controls in Fiesta Print Adjustments

Print Adjustments provide more control over how Photo captures and Photo Templates are printed.

Print Adjustments control two aspects of the printed output:

  • Scale: The overall size of the printed image
  • Offset: The alignment of the printed image on the page

Adjust these settings when the printed image appears too large, too small, or misaligned.

IMPORTANT: Print Adjustments do not affect digital captures. They only change how images are printed.

FAQ

Do I need to use the USB cable that came with Chips?

  • No. Guac can connect to Chips using any USB-A to USB-B 2.0 printer cable.
  • A printer cable that is at least 10 feet long is recommended.

Why are the printer and LED Ring not connecting?

  • If the printer and LED Ring are both disconnected, Guac may not be connecting to the iPad. Confirm that the iPad's Ethernet settings are configured correctly and that Fiesta is enabled under Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.

Why is the Print option missing during an Event?

  • Confirm that Printing is enabled under Configure Event > Printing.
  • Confirm that the Event has not reached its Max Prints per Event limit. Once this limit is reached, the Print option will no longer appear.

Do I need to own the Chips Stand to connect the DNP DS620A printer to Guac?

  • No. A standalone DNP DS620A printer can connect to Guac with a USB printer cable without requiring the Chips Stand.

Can I connect a different printer to Guac with a USB cable?

  • No. Guac and Fiesta only support the DNP DS620A for wired printing.
  • Other printer models are not supported and may cause unexpected hardware or software issues.
